Google Earth Santa Barbara XC Guide

Postby Aaron » Mon Apr 30, 2012 11:40 am

been nerding out on google earth lately and made the following SB XC Guide with Eagle Paragliding. The PDF is aimed at beginners PG/HG and has a few flying tips and a legend for the Google Earth part. The Google Earth KMZ has common triggers, LZ options, bailout descriptions, what-to-do-next options, trails/fire roads, and different altitude flight paths that play as virtual flight movies when clicked on. It covers our local hills from Painted Cave to Castle Ridge. I left out basic flight plans from our launches and didn't refer to any of those points as launches so that out of towners and beginners will hopefully still rely on instructors/human guides to give them a briefing. Enjoy!

First download/install the newest Google Earth http://www.google.com/earth/index.html

You can always find the Santa Barbara XC Guide files on Eagle's website:

http://www.eagleparagliding.com/sbxc/Sa ... _Guide.pdf
http://www.eagleparagliding.com/sbxc/Sa ... _Guide.kmz

-most of the navigating in Google Earth will be done in the Sidebar under Places. Make sure to expand the different folders as needed by clicking on the arrow just to the left of the folder icon to see all the content.

Another (good) reason to burn time on Google Earth? Yea. The KMZ's are so very very cool, and helpful to us. Bravo Aaron and Eagle! --tye w/e

Holy educational experience, Batman!!!

I have been flying here for years, but there is still clearly much to learn. Thanks for the mental download Aaron and for taking such painstaking care to make it such an easy thing to see and explore. It looks much friendlier and landable 'out there' than my previous perceptions allowed me to believe. What a great tool for the locals and visiting pilots as well.

Can't wait to see the one that connects to Ojai, the 5 and for Pine Mtn. to North of the Owens....soon right? heh, heh.

Big THANKS to you, Aaron....

Cheers,

Marty

thanks ya'll, it was a fun project. I agree, eastbound to the 5 would be way cool among others. I wouldn't mind collaborating with ya'll folks that fly through the pass and ojai regularly as i don't have enough experience through there to know the regular triggers and bailouts. we could probably bang it out in an evening or two or a couple lunch breaks at my office in carp.

Currently John Scott has a nice snapshot guide Eastbound with Tom Truax as editor

It is funny how this is seen as so new and exciting... Yet there are people who have this detailed info in there computers already made... Who have handed it out... Yet, no one asks the people who are out there doing the X C and Sheer Line flying etc. For any help..... Great Job Arron,,,, nicely done in more of a paraglider perspective, so to speak. Yet not as a whole!-!-!-!
