a sunday at santa ynez peak

Postby Aaron » Sun Sep 09, 2012 6:38 pm

timmy, howeser and i went up to santa ynez peak(4200ish) today to see if it was launchable. decent cycles in and a few little clearings gave us a few so-so options for the plunge. our choice next to one of the towers got all 3 of us aviating. howser and i floundered out front while timmy climbed out of launch. we finally got back there and joined him to 5200ish. we boated down to broadcast peak together but only lost a bunch of altitude so turned around after fishing for a hot second. got back below launch but we all found different pieces to get up again. floated around for about an hour and the 3 of us glided out to el cap beach. we were bout 2000 over the beach before landing in the sand. fun adventure with friends! not sure if we got lucky, but there was hardly any wind. anyone know if it is typically windyer' up that way?

i agree, we should crew up and fly there more often. seems like less marine influence then sb. Its only a 35 minute drive up a paved road from el capitan ranch LZ, about 6:1 glide to huge lz next to car(for reference, ej bowl to parma is about 5.5:1), only about 3:1 glide to fireroad that goes down the same spine set you launch from and continues to the big LZs. it has spots to launch in SE, S, and SW directions, but they need to be cleaned up to make it easier. Even the backside is launchable and you could land at the lake if it was blowing OTB. I think HG's use to launch there way back when but not sure on that and not sure if it is typically windy there. I'm down to go again, pretty magical back there.
