Soboba Ciinco de Mayo Fly-in

Paragliding at Soboba in the Spring is a great start, then add a whole bunch of other good stuff and a wild time is had by all. Saturday started with speed flyers, base jumpers and wing suits jumping from an ultralight. They were jumping out as fast as he could make the turn around. Nova D put on a great acro show, topped it off with some infinitys. The BBQ (pulled pork and brisket) kicked off at around 2:00 and it was good!! Then somebody flipped the big switch and the cycles started to come into the LZ. It was time to get up to launch. The ride up to launch on one of the Soboba ATV's is an adventure in it's self. My step-daughter, Julia came out for the afternoon and we hucked off for an hour long tandem in some magic air. We were one of the first ones off and it wasn't soon after that there were paragliders soaring all over the place. After Jules left I had another hour of easy soaring. The lift shut down and we all got flushed out just before sunset. The band got rocking and the party was on. Being blessed with a huge full moon, the night was brilliant. I was wiped out, left the party and crashed out around 11 PM. The next day I heard that bats weren't the only things flying around after midnight, something about the noon being really bright, almost like daylight.

At about 2 PM on Sunday big cumis were popping up all around. Got a ripper right at launch and climbed to about 6K. I spent the next couple of hours avoiding the cloud suck pulling towards Mt San Jac, boating around the local hills. Even the flats were working, lift all over the place and making it easy to maintain between 3-4K. I found one thermal trigger that was very reliable, gliding along I got a wiff of something very nasty. Along with the smell came 600-800 fpm lift coming off a local dairy farm. Talk about, "Risk vs Reward".

All together one heck of a good time
