Tuesday, 4/13, Eliminator to Sana Ynez to Ballard

Postby sd » Tue Apr 13, 2010 7:16 am

8 am Soar Throat Synopsis for Tuesday morning. Diablo is meeting at Ballard with Edward for Crew at 9 am. Some of the SB pilots are driving to Ballard to facilitate chase logistics. Unstable air mass, should be plenty of convection. Might be a double pump on the clouds, with some early convection stuff lower, and then as the day heats, higher cloudbase in the afternoon. There should be building southwest down lower after the early day SE eddy is pushed out, but it is from the NE up higher, increasing with altitude. The HGs should be able to cut the 7 knot 6K forecast from the NE, but it will likely be more problematic for PGs.

Should be soarable early, but there is some north that needs to block. The strong lapse rate should draw in and block it early down lower and higher as the day builds.

You really know how to write a flight log Tom; "The weak smooth buoyant air gave way to punchy strong cores bubbling up from the sun lit terrain into the cold spring air."

Chase

Postby Tony Deleo » Wed Apr 14, 2010 7:01 am

For the record-Regarding Robert's not having "chase": Most pilots understand that if you're flying with Diablo you will have "chase", regardless of my circumstance. We will come and get you at some point in time. If you are not with our "crew", and need a ride, do not hesitate to call or "text" Eddie at (805)302-3339 or myself (805)701-3619, with your "gps" coordinates, for a ride back to town, we will try to accomodate whenever possible. Please try to land near an accessible area, if that is not possible walk out to a/the road. It was along, exhausting day for me with most of the flight between 2500-3300' with slow climbs.

Yes Tony, you've always been great about sharing chase. Very cool of you!

Diablo, I added a paragraph to my post acknowledging Tuesday's logistics. I apologize for taking artistic license blaming lagging chase for our choice to throw in the towel. The primary reason was Hammer and I are getting older and less likely to reach for the gusto. You are clearly our ongoing inspiration to be all that we can be.

Falcon Fishbowl

Postby Tony de Groot » Wed Apr 14, 2010 9:02 am

As for myself and a number of others the early launch with low cloudbase got us scrubbed to Parma. If you didn't drift when one of the big OD cycles came and followed it downwind there wasn't much left and then you have a SE side headwind to Parma. I did try the rock area but just couldn't find enough to keep me up and landed after 28 minutes. With the day off and an early landing Jay and I broke down and drove back up in my car. People were now getting up everywhere and the day looked much better. Bob A. was still at launch and had waited for the change in wind direction and cloudbase to rise and we launched and got up at launch and flew around the local fishbowl. Bob was outclimbing me, out gliding me and chosing better lift lines on two seperate jaunts, one to Thermal Factory were I was rebuffed and another time as I stretched for the Holy hills and was rebuffed AGAIN only to watch Bob sky out!! As I left the Holy Hills I wasn't even sure I'd make Parma but there wasn't much sink and I ran into a convergence over the Monastary that took me back to 3700 feet. Still there was NE pushing me back but later in the day around 4 I felt the convergence move from the green water tank to the round house and got to 4100 there and easily flew over Thermal Factory. Ahhhhhhhh, that's what it looks like....finally. Bob A. said he'd give me a ride back up and I had to auger down from 3600 over Parma. Second flight was over 2.5 hours. Thanks to Diablo for the ride up and for Bob for the second ride up. Jay landed at Parma for the first time and again later so two times in one day. Amazing how it got so much better later with smooth lift and pretty scenery with the shadow lines on the hills late in the day.
