Skyport 2/20, East Beach (No Challenge)

Postby faoro » Sat Feb 20, 2010 2:39 pm

Tony Deleo and Fast Eddie took Art, Andy, Bob H., Brendan, Dean and I up to launch in the rapidly overdeveloping post-frontal conditions Saturday. Most of the lift was out front today and we had fun playing hide and seek with good thermals over the Riviera and on the edge of town. Andy punched through 4K over the R&R; the rest of us found cloudbase (about 3,200 feet) and higher in various locations. Cruised State Street at three and a half thousand feet and we all floated out to East Beach in the strong west wind.

Sunk out in a bad cycle at Sky Port and wasn't positive I'd make it to Saint Marys. I found a nice side hill landing next to a dirt road that led back to Gibraltar Road. I think I was one or two ridges behind the antennae farm. Got my wing a bit dirty from the muddy ashy ground. But I think it was probably a good choice, I found a for sure/safe landing and didn't want to risk getting to the LZ. Walked out 15-20 min., got ride, had a great time on the ridge with everyone.

gliding out over downtown i could see wilcox pgs seriously skied out and a few halfway to more mesa in what looked like perfect-big wilcoxian conditions. the glide looked do-able and ron and i pushed out that way for awhile but as speed dwindled into the single digits, carving thru the W was not happening. later i caught the afternoon session at bates ~ so i got my ridgefix 2! nice nice nice nice.

Bad timing and slammed into St Mary's. The rotor was a bitch and made for a hard landing.

LOL

Not that ANY of us would ever fly out over town and to the RIGHT of the slew above 1500 ft in any way shape or form.

Cool tracj logs from the weekend. Hammer took the day making it to the Hot Dog Stand and he was having a Hard time with clouds at 2500 ft all day long down through carp.

Tony tried for one last climb out in the North wind spilling over at the VOR. Took it in the teeth and ended up at the T.

Hey Bob P,

I've got video of my landing too, and it's got you in it, sinking out to Saint Mary's.
