Hey, this weekend is the SBSA Big Sur trip.
Does anyone know if the Los Padres National Forest closure affects the Plaskett Creek Campground or access to the Wild Cattle launch?

I just called the Monterey Ranger District office (831-385-5434), and they told me that the Nacimentio-Furguson road should be open, but that the areas off the road would be closed. They don't anticipate having those areas open before the weekend. I guess that means we can't drive to launch?

Also, the worse news is that the Plaskett Creek campground is closed.

I guess that means no camping either? Someone else may want to double-check, to make sure I'm not spreading any negative rumors here, but it doesn't sound very good for this weekend, I'm afraid.

I called the forest service Monterey office and was told the exact same thing. We can check on Friday to see if the closure is lifted, but I think that is doubtful.

Plaskett is closed, though the roads are open. No camping anywhere in the National Forest. What should we do?

Ask for a refund on the campsite fees, then Banditto camp at Wild Cattle.

FWIW - I camped out at Plaskett on Sunday night. No campfires not charcoal fires were allowed. Even if campground opens up, it seems likely that the ban on fires will remain in effect.

I don't think you can even access Wild Cattle by car, based on what they told me over the phone. You can drive up the paved road (Nacimiento) to the top, but you can't branch off to go into the Forest.

Here is what they have also posted on their website (see the link Bobbie posted):
"While the closure is in effect, going into or being upon National Forest System lands, roads, or trails within the Los Padres National Forest will not be allowed. Violators will be subject to fines and/or possible arrest.

County roads and state highways which run through the forest will remain open to through traffic. Drivers are urged to use caution and to be aware of possible fire activity in the area."

This is a real bummer for us.

Bummer for you? What about me! All alone in the wilderness, a broken antenna, and mean, nasty rangers chasing all my friends away.

Maybe that handsom Brendan Pegg and his cute friend DD will ride up here on their mountain bikes and rescue me!
