Sunday flying

Postby Tony de Groot » Sun Oct 07, 2007 5:04 pm

Pretty wild day. I'd love to hear all about everyone else's flight. For me I made several mistakes early which put me at 2300 feet at the antanae farm getting bucked and bulled around in wind and thermals where I couldn't even do a full 360 in lift. White nuckled it back up and got to 5600 which was nice and high. Greg caught up to me thermaling nicely and then I followed him on glide to the R.R. and he just kept going. Dang, that Sport 2 absolutely left me cryin! I've had just about enough of this. Greg flew all the way to the peak in one glide and as I didn't have enough I had to search the R.R., found nothing and had to go to the tit losing altitude and back down in to the mosh pit. Climbed back up and was already packing my bags. Flew to the Thermal Factory for another boost to 5200 and took a long glide over the city, harbor and city college and landed at the beach. How about the rest of you?

We were out in the desert this weekend chasing squatters off of the Y on Saturday. Woke up Sunday to light NE winds. Flew Garlock, but had no radio so my flight plan was to land out front. Too bad because the lift was smooth and strong to 8k. With the NE aloft it looked like Mojave and beyond would have been very doable.
There's no time like airtime and no place like cloudbase!

First flight on my new (1 year old) Litespeed. Got up over take off after a terrible launch (really thought that it was going to be ugly) and then headed over the RR where I climbed out rather quickly to the mid 4s in turbulent lift. Headed to Cathedral, but after not finding anything to really latch on to I took my altitude and b-lined it for Westbowl. Found some ratty stuff on the east spine but once I got on top things opened up and I had another quick climb to the mid 4s. A couple of 360s at the VOR and then over to the last spine before 154 (windmill? Painted Cave?). Started the return trip at 3800 ft.

Met up with John Lyons back at the VOR where we had a slow but steady climb to about 4k. At this point we had about 3 or 4 redtails flying with us. I ended following one of them over to No Name where at 5200 ft I had the highest climb out all day. From No Name it was a straight glide all the way to the thermal Factory. A few 360 and then it was over to Montecito Peak. A couple of more 360s there and then over to East Romero. Reached Romero well above the road cut, but as I flew over the spine it was flat as can be; not one beep on the vario. Rather than hang around for something to pulse through I kept on going to Castle Ridge...and kept on going because I didn't find anything over there either. Ended up landing (whacking) at Linden Park near the beach in Carp where 4-5 PGs were already packed up and ready to go home.

Way to baptise (whacking it) that new wing of yours Southside. :P

How did you like the glide? Some of the Sylmar folks wanted to come to SB on Saturday, but too north likely. Did anyone fly from the Brotherhood on Saturday?

This weekend (Saturday October 13th) we have the annual Dahlsten Cup. You're all invited. Chilli cookoff and likely plenty o beverages.

Jeff,

What time do you need to be there and what does it cost?

I'm posting a little late, I know, but really I'm right on time for me, Pokey. I got lucky on Sunday (and no, I don't mean with a woman). I launched relatively late (maybe 12:20 or so?) and made a b-line for the Thermal Factory. Got up nicely there to about 5k, and headed west. Didn't stop at RR since I didn't find much and still had over 4. Had to milk it a little at La Cumbre peak, but made gradual gains until I hit about 4,600, and then it really got consistent with a steady 600/min up. I got the highest that I've ever been in S.B. at just over 6k, tracking it back over the back. (My vario was not calibrated before I launched, and I believe that it was reading a couple of hundred feet high, but it showed 6,355 ft. max.!) I glided over to No Name and did a few turns, but didn't connect with anything, so I tagged the VOR and came back. This time I found something on the east side of No Name and got back up to 4,600 or so, and then headed for West Bowl. Again, on the east side (basically over the canyon, I got back up to around 4,600 and headed back to La Cumbre peak. I saw a lone PG pilot launching Alternator on the way. Didn't find much at the peak this time, so I moved on to RR. Again, didn't find much so I headed back to the Factory. Got back up to 4,500 and saw Little John and someone else climbing nicely on the back range, so I dove back and connected back up to 5,400. Headed along the back until I was behind Montecito Peak. I made a right and followed the spine south out to the peak and found nada. Took my altitude and headed for the beach. (I know, I should have headed back to launch for the lap completion, but I didn't want to fight the west and end up getting drilled back to Parma.) I feel fortunate to have been in the right place at the right time, off of launch.
