Nuthouse 10/1

Postby ChrisP » Sat Oct 01, 2011 5:35 pm

Andy and I launched at 12:15. I had to work for about 15min to get out, while Andy went straight to the top of the ridge and headed east. From there, we had a good tailwind and solid cores topping out at around 4300. Got to 5800 over the repeaters, in one continuous thermal that drifted across puckers, then followed Andy across Santa Paula Ridge into Fillmore. Very clear air and great views of the backcountry and ocean.

Wow! way cool you bastards!

Here in SB, Bo, Reyna and I went to altenator. All 3 of us launched and went up to about 4700. Bo and I went for a putt across the peaks to thermal factory and then out to the beach. It was great to see lots of peeps out and about floating around(hg and pg), at EJ bowl and Eliminator. Nice day to be outside!

Nice~ Going E to Ojai from SB at this time of year seems very challenging!

As a die-hard Nuthouse aficionado, I’m so thankful that during the whole inverted spring thru fall SB season, the Ojai front-country provides such great hike-up xc paragliding. And thankful to SD and anyone else that helped to pioneer the NutH!

I'm hoping to fly this route this season(Eliminator-Filmore) and am working out the waypoints for my GPS. I'm very familiar with the SB front range but less knowledgeable about the Ojai trigs. Could any of you provide coords for the following?

Nuthouse
Pyramid from Spine One
Bruce's Point
Stooges
Boyds
Puckers

Tom, any help? I'd appreciate it.

Hi Greg, it’s great to hear from you.

I just checked my GPS and I’m embarrassed to say that I don’t have any of the coordinate’s for the waypoints you mentioned.

Years ago John Scott mapped out the route from Santa Barbara to Fillmore with amazing detail. I’ll ask him to repost it.

It’s been my experience that if the day is working well enough to make it inland into the Ojai Valley the altitudes get better and the connections much easier. In fact, the middle of the route (through Ojai), is by far the easiest part providing it doesn’t OD . Once you’ve passed White Ledge you’ll want to stay on the front points of the mountain range.

Looking forward to seeing you.

southsides tutorial: http://www.hanggliding.org/weblog_entry.php?e=253

nuthouse launch: elev 1905, N34.29.198, W119.17.439

on southsides map, we call the front point noted between nord peak and 3stooges "bruces."

when crossing the road, coming from bumps after whiteledge, it's nice to have nuthouse launch dialed in, cuz it "always" works so pointing at these coordinates would be useful probably. imo, if you connect further to the NW,there can occasionally be strong draw up the 33 and if u connect further out front, it isn't usually thermic. knowing the coords of the other points is less important, imo, as its fairly obvious from the sky after looking at the excellent tutorial...(my way of saying i don't have those points...!)

go for it!

Re: SB XC Nuthouse Corrections

Southside files a hang glider, so he hasn’t launched from the Nuthouse, and his article marker for the Nuthouse does not point to the correct location, so I took the liberty of copying his article and making some minor edits, including an updated image showing the correct Nuthouse location.
