Heading to Pine on Saturday the 18th. 8:30 to 9 in Ventura

The temp spread in Ojai had been good, but the 6K temp is climbing and the surface temp is falling. The Ojai temp spread (forecasted surface temp to forecasted 6K temp) was near 30 degrees F mid week, but by tomorrow afternoon, it’s only forecasted to be in the low twenties. Time to move up a notch in altitude.

If you believe the wind aloft forecast, the base wind is light and the lapse rate good. SBA is calling for 8 and 8. WJF is calling for 9 & 9. The barometer is up (high pressure) and the air mass dry (descending air), so it takes a better lapse rate to work good (9s and 9s is well over average). The upper flow is light out of the west. If we can find a seam, the distance potential might be there.

Lancaster is calling for 106 on the surface and about 79 at altitude, so that works out to about 27 degrees over less than 4 thousand feet. The good lapse rate of 5-1/2 feet per thousand continues on up through 18K.

Hope to be airborne off the South Launch about 11.
