Flying cross country in that direction is problematic for many reasons:

  1. Lee-side conditions from The Grade itself.
  2. You are in the approach path for Camarillo airport.
  3. Landing options once you commit down the Santa Rosa valley are limited.

I would suggest two options; either get more altitude, 3000' would be nice and is very possible on certain days, or fly your cross country from Sisters to The Grade. The last suggestion is greatly preferred. In this case if you don't climb out at sisters you can land at the base of the mountain. Landing at the cemetery by The Grade has also been permitted for EMERGENCIES ONLY. This is not to say that it is ever acceptable to land there , so people, don't scratch around at the back of the grade thinking it's ok to land at the cemetery whenever you like.... these actions tend to lead to closure of sites and I would still like to fly there.

Also of important note... it is NEVER ok to land in the farm fields in that area. NEVER. If you do not have the skill to land in the appropriate landing zone which is by the mound next to the treatment plant you should hone your skills elsewhere until you can do so. Emergency landing have also been permitted on "out of bounds" sections of the golf course if you get blown back. To stress again these are emergency landings and if you get blown over the top you have made a poor decision to fly in the first place or are attempting to fly too far behind the mountain. These areas will now be brown and grassy and lie outside the rough boarding the fairways. Fly safe and smart so all may be able to enjoy this site.
