Friday at noon, no takers for the hike-up so I called Art. He was sitting in his car at the base of the Grade, waiting for the winds to come on. Art so loves the Grade.

We met at 1:00 and the winds had us very optimistic. Passing the first two launches on the hike our excitement was building as it was definitely soarable and only going to get better.

At launch the clear cool air, combined with the smell of the grass and the wet dirt, made it feel like Spring and with the winds coming in just right we were both a little giddy.

Art launched first and as I was setting up he called down to me that it was "really smooth." In a few minutes I joined him and for the next hour and a half we enjoyed classic Canejo conditions. Steady, predictable lift with lots of nice thermals. Usually I spend most of my time at the Grade doing figure-8s, but today I was doing almost as many 360s. Broke 2000 msl at one point.

We were both about 1400 msl when Art yelled to me that he was going to cross the freeway. I followed him across, getting to the fields on the North side with 300-400 to spare. The LZ we both lined up on felt a little ratty to me, so I turned downwind and hooked a final to gently float to the grass on another field. Art stuck with the original choice, got rotored into the road, landed going backwards and was dragged across the street. Only his clothing was damaged.

Except for that part it was a very, very, fun day!!
