Longest/Shortest Flight Contest - ON - for Saturday 1 March

Postby Ramey » Thu Feb 28, 2008 2:40 pm

The Third Occasional Santa Barbara Soaring Association Longest/Shortest Flight Contest is Saturday 1 March 2008 !!!!

Our best prediction calls for good lapse rate to 6K. NW winds are also predicted. I’m hoping/predicting that these will block by the middle of the day as frequently occurs here in Santa Barbara in these conditions. Contest rules – http://www.rrsd.com/sbsa/contest.html - have been refined to consider the possibility that conditions might turn out to not be launchable.

Pilots should meet at Parma Park at 9:00 AM. I realize that is very early for some of our local pilots. Please set your alarms and get there on time. This will give time to get “organized”. So I repeat:

9:00AM Saturday 1 March 2008

9:00AM Saturday 1 March 2008

9:00AM Saturday 1 March 2008

9:00AM Saturday 1 March 2008

9:00AM Saturday 1 March 2008

Everyone present at 9:00 AM is guaranteed the opportunity to participate.

Note the following:

a) You have to be a club member – Those who have not already done so are encouraged to bring their filled in membership for along with a check for $30. A copy of the membership form can be found at http://www.sbsa.info/SBSAMembershipForm.pdf . Those who live outside the area or for some reason can't support the club in this way can join the club for one day for $5 - just bring a bill.
b) Don't forget to bring your $15 contest entry fee. Please try to bring 3 x $5 bills we don't have big problem making change.
c) Team captains will all be local pilots and will be expected to apprise all team members of local rules and customs. For example, HG pilots do not head out to the beach if they have less than 3 K at the antenna farm.
d) We’ll meet at Parma Park before and after the contest. This is situated in the middle of an area of high value homes and we have worked hard over the years to get along with the owners. Also, it’s possible that members of the local news media might make an appearance. So behavior which creates any kind of public nuisance can’t be tolerated. This includes, but is not limited to, whooping, hollering, public drunkenness, excessive debauchery and similar behavior.
e) We will have some support from the SBARC – Santa Barbara Amateur Radio Club. So when communicating on your 2 M Radio, observe normal radio protocol including occasional usage of your call sign.

I don't know Robert. Looks like the winds are supposed to build throughout the day, not back off. And while GFS is still predicting a fairly good lapse rate to 6k, both NAM and the winds aloft page aren't. Plus GFS is calling for some high cloud cover.

I can see a situation where Debbie indicates that the winds are backing off around the meet time, only for it to start blowing strong NW again after everyone has already gone up the hill.

I've checked the weather every which way. I believe

a) The day will be somewhat like today was. Started out fogged in and the fog cleared by Noon.
b) That all pilots will be able to launch.
c) Forcast calls for stronger west winds later in the day. So teams shouldn't wait too long to launch.
d) These same winds make it likely the at least some pilots make it to Ojai or ?
e) I don't have any strong feeling about the laps rate. Today it was not good at 3K and below. If this repeats tomorrow there could be some very short shortest flights.

I've got the logistics all arranged. I still havn't settled on team captains and really can't until I see who shows up.

Its been a couple of weeks since we've had a good weekend. I'm anticipating a large attendance and one great day. See you at Parma at
9:00 AM, 9:00AM.....
