DUNLAP Flying Adventure - May 10-13

Postby skyoutgirl » Fri Apr 06, 2012 9:31 pm

The SBSA is hosting a trip to Dunlap for some spring flying. This is one of the favorite sites for Bay Area pilots and is a good place to learn thermaling (with P4 sponsors). Small-scale XCs are the norm, running up and down and across Dunlap valley. It was home to the US PG Nationals in 2009. On good days, it can be soarable from around 10:00 A.M. until sundown. One can expect mellow soaring flights in the morning, very strong conditions mid-day (during the summer) and evening glass-offs. Many PG pilots try to avoid summertime mid-day flights and HG pilots try to avoid landing in the LZ mid-afternoon on hot days.

The club will be putting together some camping suggestions and easy access to waivers/ site dues information in the next few weeks.

Dunlap requires a current USPHA rating, so make sure yours is up-to-date before the trip.

Located east of Fresno, Dunlap is about a 5.5 hour drive from Santa Barbara.

If possible, RSVP through Facebook SBSA Page (http://www.facebook.com/pages/Santa-Barbara-Soaring-Association-SBSA/299344460117534) or by emailing flysbsa@gmail.com

We found a great place to stay in Dunlap that will easily accommodate our group, no matter how big or small! It's called Sequoia Highlands Resort and is located up the hill near launch. This place is perfect for our crew! There is a fire pit and they offer breakfast for $8 daily.

There are two huge dorms and a tent area, both which are $15/person per night. There are 8 cabins for rent and they welcome RV's and campers. Sequoia Highlands has separate men's and women's shower and bathroom facilities and a rec room with pool tables.

You can check them out at http://www.sequoiacampingresort.com/

Let us know if you plan on going and what type of accommodations you prefer so that we have an idea of what we will need. Don't let that discourage you last minute deciders, there is plenty of space here for everyone!

Waypoints Download

Postby skyoutgirl » Sun Apr 29, 2012 9:07 pm

Big thanks to Santa Cruz Paragliding and the NorCal XC League for hooking us up with some waypoints to use for our visit. We plan on setting some fun free flight tasks. If you want to get in on some of that, go to http://santacruzparagliding.com/NCXC/downloads.html and follow the instructions. Some NorCal locals are even threatening to join us! Please also print out the Dunlap map and get in touch if you have questions.

Be prepared to join their local club, I'm not sure of the dues yet, but we must practice what we preach and support the sites we visit.

Hey Y'all...

with regards to camping....SA spoke with the guy that runs the campgrounds and he said that there is plenty of space for everyone to camp. It will cost $15 per person per night.

there are also cabins available if you cant do the camping gig. there are also dorms. We'll have more info at the meeting this Thursday.

The weather is looking excellent for this weekend (in my crystal ball). We've got folks headed up every day, starring Wednesday night so join when you can. The Sequoia Highlands Resort is expecting us, just let them know you are with the SBSA when you check in.

Ty put some driving directions and other info on the SBSA.info website.

The Dunlap trip was a major success! If you couldn't make it, don't worry we will plan another trip there in the fall and keep it on the yearly roster! Everyone got lots of flights and the resort we stayed at was perfect!

Hopefully we'll get some pics at the next meeting!
