Hi Bob

Just a word from Big Sur here. You need to check with John Bradford from the USFS office in King City about the temporary closure of Prewitt Ridge. Because of the fires that happend last year, the national forest closed. The South Coast Ridge Road is closed from Nacimento Rd to Prewitt Ridge Road until June 1st. I called John Bradford and asked him to push that date forward becasue of the mellow winter we had, but he said no. There is also a new USFS law inforcment ranger that is being really strick about this closure and is happy to give out tickets. We don't want to risk loosing this site so please don't attempt to fly here until it reopens. Maybe change the trip to June. Sorry for the news but hope it helps.

Thanks Trey !

Please keep us informed as the date gets closer. We can cancel and forward our reservation money for campsites a couple of days ahead of time. We are considering alternate locations for a flying trip that weekend. Dunlap was agreed upon as the call as the place to go, while Plowshare was the alternate.

If Big Sur can't happen, and you want to change the venue, Plowshare might not be such a bad idea. That's because there's another site not too far from there that works later in the day and is typically awesome in May. It's another hour past Plow, but if y'all are camping in that area, as opposed to making a day trip from SB, that's no big deal. It's called Midway Peak, it's just north of Taft, and it remains flyable until late in the day. The point being that if Plowshare is being fickle and skunks anyone/everyone, there's another, reliable option. I wrote a post about Midway with a bunch of info. about a year ago. Just food for thought...Dunlap is great, too, but that's got to be at least another hour further away.

Big Sur is reopening this Friday. Nearly all closed areas in Big Sur due to fire will reopen this Friday. This includes the Prewitt Ridge road that we use to fly from. Remaining closed is Escondito Camp, and Pine Ridge Trail which do not effect us...so start making your Big Sur plans for May 8 - May 9.

Cheers,
Bob
