Skyport Rehabilitation Project

Skyport took a beating from the lack of rain last year. The grass is gone on the center portion and what little soil that once existed is eroding quickly. In an effort to return the site to its former glory, two SCPA landscape fairies toiled on Wednesday afternoon to install temporary netting over the worst of the erosion, hoping to protect what little grass remains and encourage new growth during weekend storms.

I visited Skyport yesterday, having received explicit instructions from one of the fairies who, at the time, was temporarily snowbound on Mammoth Mountain, no doubt feverishly engaged in more good deeds, both on the slopes and in as many local pubs and wine bars as possible.

On the basis of my untrained eye (the other fairy was home in Ojai and unavailable to give a more nuanced opinion), the site is improving but needs more time to heal. Both fairies encourage pilots who may venture out when conditions improve, presumably on Monday or Tuesday, to stay off the netting as long as possible. In the meantime, launch from the east side, being careful, of course, to avoid that big rock protruding from the lower edge.

In recognition of their selfless efforts to protect and recover hallowed ground, I urge all Skyport pilots this weekend to hoist a glass or two to the landscape fairies. May their efforts result in future happiness for us all.
