Reserve Repacks

Postby Chris G » Sat Jan 05, 2008 1:11 pm

Probably that time of year again for a bunch of us so I thought I'd try to put together some sort of repack clinic while I was in town. I know a bunch of people are in Mexico but of those of us left, who is interested? Been more than 6 months since the last re-pack? Never been re-packed? Probably time.

I did a similar clinic at Tater Hill last year and 1 out of every 8 weren't packed right and probably wouldn't have opened.

If you're interested in having me put something together, give me a ring at 805 368-3543 or greenmntn @ ojai.net and let me know. I'll try to pick a date that works for most people. If anyone has a large open space to do the packs in and wants to volunteer it for us let me know.

I would be interested in a reserve repack if I get that far. I just picked up a wing out of my Dad's basement that's been there for 5+ years. Along with the wing is a UP harness with backside reserve...

My first step back into the sport will be at Elings park. After that I would like to soar some of the available ocean/cliffside sites in the the area. I'm not really concerned with a reserve in those situations. Though, if I finally progress to mountain flying, I'll be looking you up ;).

If you're interested in doing it we have to get it done before the 19th when my schedule fills up with an instructor clinic for Chad. After that I'm back to Georgia again.

I'm also interesting in a reserve repack. How about this weekend (Jan 12 or 13)?

Repack clinic is scheduled for Saturday Jan 12th at 5PM. It'll be at OJ's house in Ojai so if you don't know where that is, give me a ring at 805 368-3543. You'll get a chance to see a few packs done, assist in packing your own if you want, and learn the do's and don'ts of reserve packing. $30 per reserve. PDA reserves only. None of that steerable monkey business..;P

We had a good crew for the repack clinic. 5 people with 6 reserves. I think it was quite the learning experience for everyone since every reserve we looked at had something wrong with it except for one, which I'd packed myself a year ago. We had 3 snake folded into the "betty bag" one of which was at the end of its 10 year lifespan, 1 too small, 1 line-over, and all but 2 needed diaper bags instead of the heavy envelope bags. All but the one I packed last year needed a change in the pattern to meet the current packing standard. I know there are more reserves out there that haven't been packed in ages, are S-folded into the betty bag (not good for PG!), have line-overs, or are way too small. Have somebody check that stuff out before you find out the hard way! If your reserve bag is silver in color and opens on only one end, chances are it's been S-folded.
