Top landing

Postby Simon » Wed Jan 28, 2009 7:29 am

Change of subject and a confession to make. There is one maneuver that my flight instructor, SA, has asked me not to do, but i still do, and only can do on two specific sites. The maneuver is top landing. I first learned to do it at More Mesa when i was in training and since then have learned how to do it at Oat Mt. I am yet to crash doing it, and only do it when i feel very secure doing it and the wind is perfect. I even was feeling ballsy one day when i was showing some old school friends of mine what paragliding was all about and did a touch'n'go, top landed without stopping and launched again. I am not saying this to brag, I am concerned that my flying may come into question after all this talk. I have one crash and one SIV clinic under my belt, and i look forward to going XC in Ojai every chance I get to fly there. After being trained by Eagle, Mark Pratt has been and is my coach. I do not recommend trying this maneuver without supervision.

Please if I could have your attention
Hear the drums
The Phantom comes
Sad to return to find the forum we love
Threatened once more by Fillmors grasp
You have come here in pursuit of your deepest urge
In pursuit of that wish
which till now has been silent
No one would listen, no one but her
I see why especially that little brunette
‘I hear you’ ‘I hear your fears’
In the dark my heart heard music
Have you gorged yourself at last, in your lust for thermals?
I long to teach you young buckaroo
You alone can make my song take flight
Strip yourself from Eagle’s claws
I shall teach you this top landing method of mine

To be continued…

Given the right site, conditions, and information, top landing is not a "maneuver" but a perfectly acceptable practice. I can think of several places where it is as safe--and easier--to top-land as to bottom-land under most conditions. Let experience and the sound advice of your instructor and local pilots dictate where you land. From what I've seen of Moore and Oat, they're easy to top land with a PG if you know a few basic things about how it's done.

ParaPhantom, you mysterious flirt. To what honor do I owe your poetic presence? I will be your young buckaroo so long as it does not involve doing anything immoral.
