Hi Rob!
Do you have any weather condition tips and/or safety tips for launching Pine Mountain in Ojai during mid-afternoon (10:30AM-noon) in the summer? I'm itching to do XC flights from Pine in the summers, and this one looks like a great opportunity because my dad (who just retired from his career), wants to drive retrieve for me! However, I've only ever been to Pine for evening glass offs, which only had me going to land at the sand pile after a short while. I'd like to do midday in order to go places either on the Ojai range toward Fillmore or SB, or over the back of Pine to the Lockwood Valley. I picked Marty's brain a little last week, and he warned me of the "50/50" among other things in the desert valleys.
In my experience during glass offs with Chris Grantham, I've been told to get away from launch and proceed to the spine out front and to the right of launch, trying to intercept it above the broken Bonsai-looking pine tree. Cycles for launch were usually light and straight in. During midday, I imagine the cycles are a lot stronger (especially over the summer), and I've heard from Bruce Kirk that he experienced getting lifted straight up after launching midday one time. Is there anything else to watch out for on launch?
For wind forecasts, I've been looking at the Santa Barbara Airport winds aloft forecast by NOAA and the Topa Flyers lapse rate charts for balloon forecasts.
For real-time conditions, I've been looking at the following station, which I believe is slightly lower and to the west of launch (it looks like it's messed up at the moment though):
http://www.findu.com/cgi-bin/wxpage.cgi?call=KJ6QEF-1
I've also been looking at a generic Weather Underground website for real-time conditions in Ojai town (Ojai City Public Works Yard at Elev. 713 ft.).
Thanks for any advice you can give!
