A Saturday Report

Postby NMERider » Sun May 22, 2016 8:06 am

The forecast looked really epic on Friday night and Fast Eddy was available to drive chase to I figured it was worth the 300 miles of driving coming from Long Beach. 6AM the winds on LaCumbre and Monetcito looked encouraging and later the Eagle Cam showed the kind of early morning clouds that reform into something nice so I loaded up and made the drive. Willie launched tandem around 10:45 and had a nice smooth climb up toward cloud base out front past the round house. Little John launched around 11:40 and took a long time to get above the antenna farm as the clouds got darker and more filled in so I decided to relax on launch and not push it. I finally hucked off around 11:50 and didn't get anything workable until over the round house spine. This eventually got me to base and I was on my way.

The track log tells the rest of the story. Base never got very high and I crossed the pass with little to spare. Not even enough to reach the high school. While on glide to land I found there was lift coming off on the flats and took a long, long drift in zero sink to the windward point of the Nordhoff Peak spine. That got me up to base around 5,150' and I tagged Nordhoff Peak. Base was still too low for me to safely get around Thomas Acquinas so I regrouped and told Eddy I was going to try to land in Ventura. I never really got established at base again then changed plans to possibly flying back to launch for a 51-mile OnR.

My this time I was toast physically and mentally and took a breather, flying unzipped in the landing position just working the lift over the flats near the water park and above the foxtail field. I landed after 3-1/2 hours.

While I was struggling to get back up from the West side of Whiteledge I asked Eddy to take a photo of me. My camera has a 480mm zoom so it came out like this.

It's fun to replay the driver's tracks when I have a recording GPS in the car. Here's how this flight/chase looked...
