Friday Morning Perception:

Friday's lower level lapse rate looks weaker than Thursday's with some lower level cooling from light onshore flow as the high pressure relaxes. The temperature spread from the Montecito reporting station to La Cumbre Peak was only about 3 degrees F at 7:30 am. The spread should improve some as the day warms, but with a little onshore flow that didn't exist earlier this week it likely won't stretch as much.

The lapse rate looks much better above 3K and also away from the ocean. Ojai actually looks fairly robust, but with the winds aloft from the west it would be a short course to Fillmore or Piru, and flying upwind westbound toward Santa Barbara is not an option.

Friday's winds aloft are forecasted to be consistently from the west, light down low this morning, increasing with altitude, increasing some in the afternoon. The afternoon west wind will likely get the better of the weak thermals near the coast in the afternoon, so it might work better earlyish (11:15 to 12:30?).

Max open distance potential might be from Santa Barbara if, and it's a big "IF", you can get past Summerland and Carpinteria where the range is lower and less protected from the ocean. If you can reach Power Line Ridge, you should also be able to reach Noon Peak where the altitude should get better. If you can't get past Ramero, then it looks like a flight from Ojai to Fillmore or Piru will offer the max open distance potential (locally). Ojai is more of a sure thing, but it is easier to get to launch in Santa Barbara.

The lapse rate looks much better up at Pine Mountain, but the increasing wind at altitude is problematic.

The lapse rate deteriorates further on Saturday as the cooling continues and the winds aloft increase. Sunday is pre-frontal and will likely have some wind from the SE.
