Sunday Outlook

Postby Chris G » Sat Jan 05, 2013 5:58 pm

Getting "blown out" around here is becoming more and more relative and Sunday looks to be no exception! We'll be post frontal with the typical strong N which should wrap in at Bates. It's gonna be strong so bring your speed gliders! There are a lot of us around now so it should be a great show!

9:30 am update:

The wind at the Peak and the mid channel buoy picked up some after sunrise, but both have backed off a bit. The clouds behind Carpinteria now have a pronounced drift from the west. They do show a lot of lifting. SBA is calm.

Out the door in the Toyota to look at the coast and possibly the low launches, but expect to retreat back to Bates. No crew.

Low Tide is midday

7:30 perception:

I initially thought the mountains might work early from the lower launches, followed by Bates before it blows out for PGs.

The winds have been clocking around from the SE to the West, then the NW. It was 8 to 10 on the ridge from the West at 4 am. By dawn it was OTB from the NW, but still mild. A strong 130 MPH jet is forecasted to move overhead later today. The mid channel buoy is only blowing around 10ish at dawn, and the clouds along the ridge behind Carpinteria don’t seem to have much movement.

The wind has quickly jumped from 10ish just before dawn. At 7:30 it was gusting to 20 at the Peak from the NNW, so the mountains look iffy for PGs. The faster gliders may be able to get off from the lower launches, but I’d be happily suppressed to read about someone making the connection.

The lapse rate is ballistic, so once we get some sun it should light off. There are some back side showers in the wake of the front due to the instability, so we may have too dodge some development and an occasional squall with the potential of associated gust fronts. I’d recommend being on the ground by oneish.

If you do fly to Ventura from Bates, leave plenty of beach behind and plan to be back in on landing (PGs). There are various techniques. I typically unbuckle and step out of my harness on touchdown, holding one break handle to kill the canopy without getting pulled over.
