Saturday Morning Preflight Perception
Not sure I’m qualified to post a perception that will correlate to reality after my optimistic assessment last Sunday was a dud. At least my daughter captured fond memories of her first snowman… But it is the weekend, so…
The weather is changing with a fast moving storm forecasted to sweep across our local this evening. Unlike yesterday’s offering of a light tail wind and mellow climbs comfortably above minimum go altitudes, today will have more umph.
Pre-frontal typically means wind from the SE. It’s was already blowing 10ish from the south at La Cumbre Peak at dawn. The temperature is falling, the wind is building and the clouds are coming. I’d recommend launching earlier than the past few days. Avoid the ridge line and don’t get caught in the back of a canyon. The forecasted wind is less than 10 from the SSW, but we typically get some compression venturi across our ridge and more of an east component because it wants to squeeze around Point Conception.
It might be a good day to launch the Nuthouse and run back to SB, but I think most of us will opt for the headwind over a hike.
Sunday looks like a typical post fontal event with a potential window at Bates before it blows out.
