The Eagle van was pretty loaded as we headed out of Parma at 10am. We had a couple eaglets who needed more high flights and thermaling practice, and we were all hoping to do some turns as well.
The cycles were nice when we arrived at launch, and Kevin Howe punched off first. He climbed out and headed for the R&R. Eaglets Ken Henius and Tim Barker did a good job of working the house thermal and got 400 over before heading out to the RH spine. They didn’t get much love at the RH spine. The high clouds started to shut down the heating, and the wind direction down low seemed to turn from South West to South East.
Magic Mike and a handful of other pilots got drilled when things shaded and they landed at St. Mary’s. Chris from Telluride and Ty made a play for the Holy Hills since it was SE down low. They did a good job of staying in the game thermaling around the holy hills until the high clouds shut things down.
The rest of us sat on launch waiting for the high clouds to move on, and Kevin Mcginley had a nice launch and climbed out after the sun had 5 or 10 minutes to cook things a bit. B & JR (from Telluride) had a nice climb outs from launch, and Jason Middleton made it work at launch as well.
Allison and I didn’t get any love from the house thermal. She headed toward the round house spine and hit some sink on the way. She did a great job of changing her line and getting into St. Mary’s. I made a play for the Holy Hills, and got a nice climb when I arrived. I transitioned to the tit then joined JR at the factory. We flew around a bit and then headed for Parma.
The direction at Parma was mostly South East, but sometimes North, and even straight East. It was bubbling up and letting off in all directions, but it was mostly SE drift. Everybody enjoyed the day. It would have been nice if the high clouds hadn’t shut things down. Kevin Howe had the longest (duration) flight, and managed to hang in there at the R&R when the heating was really shut down by the high clouds. I guess it pays to be the windy dummy sometimes. We will be looking to hit the mountains again tomorrow so check for a morning post.
