The main problem with Painted Cave to Lizard's Mouth transition is class C airspace (from SFC to 4000 MSL). If you follow the road you need to be above 4000 otherwise you're in airspace, so backside more preferable for this matter. I flew this route last year and yes, I did found 1 or 2 thermals in between.
