Rat Race 2007

well, well,

This is rad. Marty and I left on Wednesday night at 11pm and arrived at the camp site at about 4pm. We ended up close by 12 noon and ended up stumbling around filling up with gas, water, LP and food. Not to mention Marty not knowing North from South  . Once there Rob had set us up with the best sites in the park for the Eagle crew. We were still amped and got set up and did a gear check for the morning. Morning came and I woke up later than I have in a long time (9am). We cooked breakfast and got ready to head to launch. Meet time was 11:30 and the word on the street was that the weather conditions havent been this good for a really long time and outlook is great for the Race. We got to launch and everyone was in line and gearing up. I got my poop together and got in line. I got on deck and spread out while the guy in front of me almost ran off the edge of the hill as he had to stop and kill his wing due to a tangle. That was a big confidence builder with the whole world waiting and I was set up to go. On my second pull up I nailed it and I went out front in to some of the best conditions I have ever flown. felt out the area around launch for a while until I hooked a good strong one that took me to about 6500. I was watching Marty, Rob, Brad G., Farmer, Riss and Nick as they went on glide and as soon as I got 500 more feet I decided to follow to Rabes. I arrived at the spine and to my right was a huge street. I started working my way towerd it and sasnt real happy with the lack off lift and sink hole just before The mother load. i worked hard back and forth and couldn't seem to get through. I turned and went out front thinking I could bench up only to end up heading west toward camp. I ended up flying for another 45 minutes over the valley in very boyant air. Anyhow, enough for now. Landing was good and the cold beer is better. I will post pictures soon. Wish everyone was here

Our roving reporter and eye in the sky Taliban Chris reports "Lots of wind, ratty conditions, two reserve tosses, and a full cascade in front of launch."

Sounds like previous years. I wonder who they used as a stunt double for the cascade since the originator isn't there?

1st Race Day (Big Air) 1st day of competition--

Today was unbelievable. We launched between 12:15 and 2:15. The race started at 1:30. So I launched at 12:30 so I could have an hour to get set up for the start of the race and get used to the rowdiness of the air. Its amazing when your at launch with 120+ pilots that are all in line to launch in to the same airspace. Once I took off I was able to fly the entire course and was on final glide to goal when I found myself in massive sinking air that was brutal and took me to the ground. I tried hard to stay in it because I was so close to the finish. I just couldn't find any lift. I wasn't alone as 3 other pilots and I landed in a local pasture. 51 pilots made goal and I fell in to 80th. This guy John had to throw his reserve parachute because some guy entered the thermal and tried to travel straight through the middle causing a mid-air. Anyway this guy ran right through Johns glider and ripped the lines off one side. He threw his reserve not to far from me and I watched him as he fell out of the sky. He actually went up for a while in thermals and then landed on the other side of the mountain and ended up fine. Josh Riggs was 500' off the deck 200m from goal and took a frontal witch cascaded and caused him to huck as well. Dean Stratton took the day and the other local pilots did well. I will let them tell there stories. To say the least this is the most technical flying I have ever done and am learning a ton. Its cool to hear the 5030 sing its little song when you hit a cylinder. I cant wait to hear the goal song!!! Pictures of the reserve pull are attached. Have a good one till next time. We all wish everyone is here.

Excellent results, and first day/first comp! And you were able to take pictures. Probably the jacket helped...

Just remember: blue up, green down.

Okay here is the scoop, in brief. I hope I will forget nobody from SBSA/SCPA

Yesterday: made goals: Dean (1st pilot at goal), Andy, Lee, Doug and myself (although I screwed up my GPS and my day was lost). But the best was Rob, who entertained all of us at goal (arriving really low, encouraged by all pilots with big "oh", 'ah" depending on his vertical speed, and landing down wind). Jim Maddox, Chip and Marge flew as well.

Today: made goal: Dean, Lee, Doug, Rob and Andy. I landed pretty early in the game, Jim landing maybe 3 miles short of goal. I am not sure about the others yet.

Flying conditions are awesome. The tasks were pretty short though, 'cause of a risk of wind.

Spirits are high.

Wow ! Way to go - keep it up ! Sounds like a great time. And wish I was there. Spin some circles and get some cloudbase for the rest of us, 'cause the only cloudbase down here is the fogbase ! Bet that Eagle rig is hopping ! :P

Spoke with Deano today after task, he wasn't sure but thought he finished 2nd (close finish with Len in 3rd). After yesterday's 1st he's possibly in the lead. He tells me that Andy, Doug, Riss, Rob and a few other S.B. pilots made goal both days. Jim, Chip, Irene and Lee are also kicking some butt with killer flights.

I always thought we had a strong local pilot base, this group is proving it.

Congrats to all of you and keep the reports coming!!

Well the high pressure N winds are keeping the tasks short-about 1 hour-fishbowls with race to goal it is still great flying. I guess you all have seen the results I still have not, but I think Dean is either one or two and I think I'm top twenty. I have been working on making goal and not racing but going fast and it is paying off. A few times I wanted to go early but waited and it worked better than the go low and fast approach I think. I have only been relatively low a couple of times and it has been quite stong and ratty until about 500 over then it smoothes out and is good. The gaggles have been quite tame for the most part easy to find another thermal if you want to venture out.

Chip is leading in the enthusiasm division. He can't hold back his glee, even after landing out sort of in a tree and of course poisen oak. He was still stoked.

The camp is cool with everybody hanging and playing music and eating together.

More later, Andy

yesterday was awesome although I landed side hill 5k short of goal in a valley. The flight itself was great and I am certainly learning a lot. I once again made every turn point and was way ahead of the day before on final glide when I got stuck low between two fingers. I was flying my new titanic (XL Kantega 2) that Kabir was nice enough to bring with him for the first time and it was really making a big difference until I got into the rotor and then it acted the same as my other wing lol. It was a little frustrating being so close to goal and falling short again. It only took 2 hours to get the wing out and about a 3/4 milke hike to the road. Overall I am 63rd and 21 st in the serial class. Everyone is doing great and the Topa pilots are the strongest group here. Wish us all luck and have a great day. We are at launch and getting ready to get the days task. later.

woah nelly,

today was a windy mutha. most pilots landed in the primaery LZ except the Top Guns (not all and yet to know who) but a lot where with us in the LZ where we helped pilots land backwards. I havent seen Doug but have to give him props for being in 4th serial class and Lee as well in 5th. Lots of respect to all these incredible pilots. This flying stuff is not as easy as it looks. I have been learning a ton and cant believe the ammount of information I have learned in less than a week. Cant wait to finish tomorrow and head to the Nats.

out for now
