an out of towner friend wanted to fly and brian wanted to huck his new Niviuk Peak 3 which is a DHV 2/3 two liner. pretty sexy thang! anyways brian called me and we looked at the weather. super hazy/foggy/marine scud, light over the back all day at the top, la cumbre peak was 70F and Monticito foothills were 65F(collapse rate), however monticito said light sw(a ray of hope). using marty's weather prediction theory after seeing that skyport was possibly launchable from the monticito reading, i said 'sounds great! lets go'! i rearranged my work schedule and was out the door as i am an easy sucker for a ride up the hill and an afternoon sledder. we ran off skyport between 2:30-3 in light cycles. we all surprisingly climbed a few hundred at launch. slow smooth bubbles eventually got me over the top of thermal factory at 3500. joined the rest of the crew at the monastary after a while to enjoy plentiful lift back to 3000 all around there. nice hour flight late in the afternoon. i've noticed that the rattlesnake canyon area is very buoyant and often lifty late in the day with the west wind and marine influence. last week willy launched about 4pm and got to 4k and out to the beach. never underestimate the possibility of late in the day flights in sb. at minimal the sledder is buoyant, smooth and beautiful.
