Well... the Owens didn't dissapoint our ragtag group of pilots that went to the Owens last weekend. 7 of us piled into my truck with gliders, camping gear, and harnesses and took off Friday afternoon. After a couple of detours on the way up we made it to the Alabama Hills for some great camping.
Saturday was looking to be a "sledder" type of day with a north wind blowing in the morning and on the way up. That was a completely wrong assumption as the day turned out to be great with thermal tops around 11.5K. Everyone had a blast (many first timers) and eventually landed at Diaz Lake. Max had the low save of the day early on.... (he can tell that story)
Good camping that night with lots of entertainment, and what looked to be a potentially better day on Sunday. Sunday was very similar to Saturday with thermal tops to 11.5k and Max had the flight of the day on Sunday. Many of us landed at Lone Pine airport.
Light and variable winds both days both up high, and on the ground. Many landings were no-winder's.
Plenty of stories to tell... I'll let the others post their experiences...
